HELPING MUM OR DAD DOWNSIZE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Sometimes the hardest part of downsizing isn’t about finding a smaller home.  It's about sorting through a lifetime of memories, making difficult decisions and balancing practical tasks with emotions. Whether Mum, Dad or a loved one is moving into a smaller home, a retirement village or looking to simplify life, it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the process.

The good news is you don't have to tackle everything in one weekend. Taking it one step at a time often makes the journey easier, for everyone involved.

Start with a conversation, not the cupboards

Before you begin sorting through belongings, spend some time talking together about what's ahead.

What are they looking forward to?

What are they worried about?

What are the things they couldn't imagine living without?

Having these conversations first helps ensure the downsizing process is something you're doing with them, not to them.

Don't try to do the whole house at once

One of the biggest mistakes families make is trying to tackle an entire house in a day.

Instead, choose one room - or even one cupboard first.

Small wins build momentum and make the whole process feel far less daunting.

Some days you'll make lots of progress. Other days you might simply share stories over a box of old photographs. Both are valuable.

Taking moments to share memories and stories is a healthy part of the process.  Giving yourselves time to do this may feel slower, but those conversations often become some of the most meaningful parts of the journey.

Create simple sorting piles

Keeping the decisions simple can make everything feel more manageable.

Consider creating five categories:

  • Keep

  • Gift to family or friends

  • Donate

  • Sell

  • Recycle or dispose of

Not everything needs to be decided immediately. If something carries strong memories, it's perfectly okay to come back to it another day.

Remember that memories aren't things

One of the most difficult parts of downsizing is feeling like you're letting go of memories.

The truth is, memories don't live in furniture or boxes - they live in people and the stories we share.

Sometimes taking a photo of a treasured item or writing down the story behind it can preserve the memory without needing to keep everything.

Accept help when you need it

Downsizing can be physically demanding as well as emotionally exhausting.

Friends and family can often help with sorting, packing and decision-making.

There also comes a point where having someone help with the practical tasks like moving heavy furniture, clearing unwanted items or preparing the property for its next chapter, can take a huge weight off everyone's shoulders.

You don't have to carry it all yourself.

Remember there's no perfect timeline

Some families finish downsizing in a few weeks.

Others take months.

Neither is right or wrong.

Give yourselves permission to pause when you need to and celebrate each step forward, no matter how small it feels.

A little encouragement

If you're helping a parent downsize, chances are you're juggling plenty of other responsibilities too.

Be kind to yourself.

This isn't just about sorting belongings - it's about honouring a lifetime of memories while making room for what's next.

Progress is progress, even if today all you managed was one drawer.
